How to Save Money at Emeryville Vet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've brought many cats here over the years & we always receive great care. All the staff I've interacted with is friendly & informative. The doctors have taken great care of my pets and been really good about explaining treatments & options.

I love Emeryville Vet Hospital! I've taken 2 of my puppies Lily and Kevin here since I adopted them in September 2020 and July 2021 to Emeryville Vet and they've taken care of them like their own. I look forwarding to bringing them here because I know the staff will reassure that they have the best care as soon as possible. I've had multiple interactions with Sarah and Carly and they're the best! They are very professional, informative, and super caring and loving to my two dogs. They try to squeeze in an appointment same day, next day, or week if possible. Emergencies are usually referred elsewhere this place is only for routine care and not emergencies. The staff is gentle with instructions and explain every item on our bill. They also give me a chance to review it and will print out a new bill if I want to remove something. They don't bill insurance directly so make sure to send the itemized receipt to your pet insurance provider. They also give courtesy calls after every appointment to check on how my pups are doing. They're really personable on the phone and they answer any questions or concerns I have. They also call to remind you of your appointment the day before which is really nice of them. If I need a vaccine record for them, they make sure to email me right away. Our Vet, Dr. Andersen has also been very helpful when guiding and educating me about spay and neuter, all vaccinations and what they're for, as well as how to care for my dogs who often get ear infections. They also take all the necessary COVID precautions which I appreciate. You usually have to call them so that they can get you since they don't usually let all pet owners inside. Last week I was finally able to be with my dog Kevin inside the room where he was getting treated. You can tell that they love their job and that they treat your pets with the utmost respect and love. I will definitely continue coming here as Kevin and Lily grow. Thank you to everyone at Emeryville Vet Hospital family.

Love the good people at Emeryville Vet Hospital for giving my Callie a same day appointment! This is usually impossible in the Bay Area. They were thorough, knowledgeable and very kind to both of us. They had us in and out in less than 45 minutes. The price was fair - less than I expected so win-win. Thank you all! 💗

After an initial checkup for my dog, he needed a teeth cleaning, possible extractions and a really bad ear infection. I made an appointment 3 weeks later to get the procedure done. When Lokai and I arrived the day to get the procedure done I had many questions and concerns for my dog. The staff was extremely helpful in answering my questions and my listening to my concerns. It really took my worries away. I picked up my dog several hours later and the staff treated me with the utmost respect. They kept me notified on his aftercare and answered all the questions that I asked. Everyone was very helpful and it was very nice of Dr. Anderson to keep me totally informed and even called me after his procedure to checkup on Lokai after we made it home. The vet bill was much less then the original estimate and the staff went over everything in regards to billing and my dogs healthcare. I would recommend them to anyone that owns a dog.

Finding a vet in the Bay Area with availability is difficult, which is why we ended up taking our newly adopted stray cat here in June 2022. While we were grateful at the time to just get her in anywhere, I now understand why this place had so many open appointments. They couldn't care less about my cat's health and were downright incompetent when it came to helping her when she was pregnant: we took her in several times from June-August 2022, and the vet tech doing the ultrasound commented that she "couldn't find heartbeats for the kittens", but she "wasn't the best at doing ultrasounds, so it's probably not an issue." When my cat started showing pregnancy complications (re: no heartbeats in the kittens), I took her in again. The vet told me she "needs surgery, ideally asap, but we don't have availability until next week, so you'll have to call around." There was literally no vet within a 100-mile radius of the Bay Area who had availability, and they basically said "not our problem!". All of the stress and heartbreak over losing kittens, and then almost losing our cat, could have been prevented if Emeryville Vet Hospital had competent and compassionate staff (thankfully my cat pulled through thanks to the amazing work of Feral Change).
