How to Save Money at El Segundo Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

What an outstanding experience I had with Dr. Streiber and his staff. Not only did they fit me in as a new patient the day I needed help; they were so gentle with my very sick girl! Dr.Streiber went above and beyond and called me after hours to check on Addie! Best experience ever!!! Thank you ESAH, you all are amazing!

I had hoped that I would love El Segundo Animal Hospital because it is located very close to my house. Going there would mean less time in the car, therefore less stress for my cats. Unfortunately, I have found this establishment to be a big disappointment. It has become clear to me that this place is not the right fit for my pets because getting in touch with the veterinarian with questions and concerns has been extremely difficult. Test results were not forthcoming for my sick cat until I got frustrated with the staff and, when I finally did talk to the vet a couple of days later, I felt that he really didn't care all that much about my concerns. In fact, I found him a bit on the rude side. Therefore, I sought out another pet hospital in a nearby town where I have no doubt that my pets' needs are a priority. They are worth the drive. After reading reviews and talking to others, I see that I am not the only one who feels this way. I do not recommend El Segundo Pet Hospital.

Very great place if you don't have pet insurance. But does take long

The review below is also a copy of the complaint I have filed with the Veterinarian license board. I brought my elderly cat in for care on 02/18/2022, as she was losing weight and behaving very lethargic. I was unable to come inside the facility, however, the "Dr" called me to inform me that my cat had an infected tooth, and needed a full elderly feline workup. I approved the work and the charges for the blood and urine samples, and took home some antibiotics provided to her until they could determine if she could survive the tooth extraction surgery. On 2/22 I noticed her having diarrhea and stopped providing her the medication. On 02/24 the stools had not corrected, and I had received no results from the veterinarian, so I called the clinic. I left several messages for the clinic, and the vet never returned my calls. I finally requested today 3/3/2022 that they simply send me a copy of any lab results that came in, so that I could seek appropriate care for my animal at another clinic. The receptionist did promptly send me the results, which were dated 2/20/2022. The results show that my animal is having some internal issues, specifically very abnormal white blood cell markers. For a 15 year old animal, this is a completely unacceptable level of care, and negligent for the life a welfare of a living animal.

I am disappointed to write this review, but recommend seeing another vet. My dog passed away, and our primary vet was unable to see him for 5 days for an emergency appointment. I will never take an animal here again.
