How to Save Money at Fox Hills Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Incredible experience there! My dog is so shy and timid and they made him feel right at home. The veterinarian is a professional but yet light hearted and he made the whole experience of my dog getting treatment smooth as can be!

My shihtzu was attacked by a Great Dane. Doc took very good care of my baby. Staff is great. I'm happy I chose Fox Hills to treat my Kaz.

I brought my dog here for a possible UTI. The vet performed the following “procedure”: he pulled the loose skin on my dog’s back upward as far as possible, and while holding her skin in that position, claimed to be demonstrating that my dog was dehydrated and needed an IV fluid treatment. Then he presented me with a quote for that and other services, and medications, totaling nearly $800. He did NOT test her skin’s elasticity by seeing how quickly it snapped back when let go of (immediately for my dog). Nor did he give her a pressure or dryness test on her gums (blood returned within 1 second; her gums were wet). He performed only the improper test I described which would indicate that every sharpei and bulldog is dangerously dehydrated. I said that I needed a second opinion and left after paying an $85 exam fee. After collecting my thoughts, and because my CC requires it before filing a dispute (something I have never done before), I called to demand a refund of the exam fee, and he angrily granted my request. A Vetco vet that I brought my dog to later that same day did not corroborate his claim of dehydration. Another review here by Fabio Costa describes a nearly identical experience. Please read that review. I wish I had before coming here. I leave it to the reader to judge whether or not these facts suggest that this veterinarian is dishonest. I definitely recommend that you do not bring your pets here.

Fast, friendly, and cheap! Very happy I came here. I came to this place right after our male pet rabbit got hurt (he got loose, ran off, and had a bad fall at some point in the night). I called *at least* 6 different animal hospitals in the area to ask if I could bring him in, but none would take him due to the fact that they did not treat rabbits ('cats and dogs only' is what I kept hearing over the phone). I finally decided to give this place a try after I heard that they did treat rabbits, as well as cats and dogs, and other pet animals. When I called, someone picked up right away and offered to see me that same day and set up an appointment for that afternoon. I was able to bring our rabbit in just a few hours after I called. I spoke directly to the doctor and he did a complete exam + x-ray within a short amount of time (I'd say I was there no more than an hour or so, max, as I got in at 1 pm and was out by 2 pm-ish). He shared his insight, explained how he examined him, and even gave us a copy of all our paperwork and x-rays as well. He was also very up-front about the costs of everything and had every part of the service printed in writing, so I knew what the total cost would be before I agreed to it. I also saw other customers coming in and out with their pets (they were busy!) and the doctor and staff seemed very friendly and sweet. I was very happy I came here and I will come back! If you're looking for a tiny little mom-and-pop-style vet to take your pet to in LA, then I'd say this is your place.

We started coming into this office after our move from another state. Our beloved dog’s health took a sudden turn for the worse. Dr. G. acted fast, running test, and making room in his schedule at the last minute. Even after our dog was taken to a specialist at the animal emergency room, he called us daily to check in. We are so appreciative of his kindness and care. I’ve never had a vet call to check in even after the pet is transferred to a specialist. We will continue to trust Dr. G with our little fur babies.
