How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

After numerous vet visits and discovering my Lily's health was not improving, I decided to put her to sleep. I contacted this hospital that is open 24 hrs. They were very sympathetic in the whole process. During check out they explained the cremation process and told me I would get my pretty kitty in a wooden decorative box along with her paw print. This was all included with my visit cost, which was very reasonable. ....I could not beleive this was all included. Godbless this place and the the facility that took care of her after🙏🙏🙏

This visit was a week after our dog passed away. We were taken into the back room. The staff did a wonderful job of getting our dog cremated. The attached photo was taken as we were leaving for Banfield. He died about 20 minutes later.

If you are PCSing and need a FAVN test done for your animals, DO NOT COME HERE. We were charged over $1000 for our dog and cat to get their test done here because it is the clinic to which we've always brought them. When we were later told that MCAS Miramar's Vet Clinic takes military pets (not just MWDs), we went there to make sure our paperwork was good. I look up on their wall there at their price listing: $40 per FAVN test. I even asked if a zero had fallen because I could not believe that we paid over $500 per pet at Banfield and Miramar was only going to charge $40. When I approached the staff at Banfield about it, she rudely suggested I should have shopped around, as if this was something I could simply Google. A +/- $20 or even $50 difference, I get. But charging hundreds per pet when the test at another office is only $40 PER PET... that is *PREDATORY PRICING*. Disgusting. Also, one of the staff had arbitrarily put in a false rabies date for our dog. He had a rabies shot from the humane society before we got him and then again in the middle of 2021. So why does it say he also got a rabis shot in Sept of '22? It said it was "client provided data" when, again, we have only ever taken them to THIS Banfield. So I couldn't have provided a cert from somewhere else, especially when he isn't due until next year for the shot he got in 2021. This place used to be great. I'm glad we're leaving. Please do not come here, especially if you are military and stand a chance of going to Japan. These mistakes cost us hundreds extra and could potentially make us have to quarantine our pet there even though we did everything possible NOT to have to do that!

I notice this Banfield is going down hill for some reason. I also notice A lot of veterinarians has left my main veterinarian she has left i ask to see our second veterinarian he has left. Now they only have 2 veterinarians that's why its hard to get appointment. i also notice only one person running the front desk when i usually see 3 people. I called today 4/11/23 i need records for one of my fur baby i was on hold for 45 min and still didn't talk to anyone I wasted my lunch. one of my fur baby had 2 seizure on Sunday 4/9/23 went to emergency pet hospital. I call Banfield Monday Moring tried to make appointment so they can see my fur baby they where booked till next week . I have no choice to take my fur baby to a different pet hospital instead of Banfield. I HOPE THIS BANFIELD GETS BETTER OR IM GOING TO CHANGE HOSPITALS.
