How to Save Money at Cambrian Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We started taking our two min-pins to Cambrian Animal Hospital a few years back. They've always given excellent care. This past year we had to make the difficult decision to put down our older (15 yrs.) dog down. He stopped eating and just got so thin. I made the appointment and took him in. The staff was so caring and nice during the appointment. I couldn't enter due to COVID but they came to the car, made sure I was able to say goodbye and spoke to me after the procedure. A few days later my family received a very thoughtful sympathy card from the staff. They also took care of the cremation and I was able to pick up the ashes about a month later. When I picked up the ashes once again the staff was sympathetic and kind. They offered sympathy and were just very caring. I appreciated all their kindness.

I brought my 8 week old mini long-haired dachshund in for a health assessment. I was very pleased with the Covid-19 compliant office procedures and fluid communication even though I couldn't go into the office with my pup. I was impressed with Dr. Saito. She was familiar with the breed as she has one at home. She spent a long time discussing different aspects of care and answered all my questions in depth. It was a great first visit and I look forward to developing a long term relationship with them. The prices were moderate for the area. They will quote vaccination fees and other services over the phone. Very user friendly. Two weeks later I find myself totally satisfied with our second visit (puppy shots). Doctor Saito spent considerable time talking with us about puppy behavior and offering advice. There was no rush to move on to end our conversation.

The folks here clearly all care a great deal for animals. Both veterinarians are patient, very pleasant, and kind -- & more than willing to explain things to you as well, which I appreciate. The hospital is small, but everything is clean and spotless. They have a boarding facility next door, in the same building, though I've never used it so I can't really say anything about it. About the only thing I consider a downside is that the hospital is not computerized - all the records are handwritten and hand-filed. However, I feel the excellent care makes up for that.

I have never been without a dog in my life and in 45 years I have never really cared for any of the Vets my parents used or that I used until I came across Dr. Kestler 8 years ago. I went to him after I adopted my boy due to the fact he was one of the Vets on the list that offered a free exam for newly adopted animals and his practice is around the corner from my house. Truly a great find! He is very patient, great with my fur babies, answers all my questions, and even teaches me preventative care for them. When any of my babies are under the weather he doesn't automatically jump into all the expensive tests, etc. like so many Vets do (I have some bad experiences with Vets that have done that). He takes his time and tries to eliminate the small things first before he starts recommending anything more expensive and/or intrusive. So far, he has always been able to pin down what the problem is without having to go into the more costly treatments. Although, I would drop all the money I could if it meant making my babies better when something was wrong. It's just nice to know he isn't going to do unnecessary things just to get my money. I trust him completely with all of them (2 dogs and 2 cats). I highly recommend Dr. Kestler. In fact I now have my mom and sister both taking their fur babies to him.

Dr. Kessler is a great vet and person. I've taken my pets there for many years and he's dealt with emergencies along the way too. He's not the kind to make money off of people's misfortunes, and I trust him completely. Highly recommended!
