How to Save Money at Apple Valley Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This animal hospital has to be one of the best around. I recently lost my 8 year old cat and I was looking to get him cremated, this hospital was price efficient for this and the staff were all super sympathetic and kind during this time. After the cremation I received my boys ashes along with the cement paw prints, two weeks later I just received a card from them expressing their condolences and with printed paw prints that I did not expect. Highly recommended for any of your animal needs. Rip my baby boy 💙🌈 Thank you AVAH for everything during this difficult time ❤️

I took in my Three-week-old Bengal kitten on Christmas Eve, and they were so nice. They gave my kitten Antibiotics, and he is all better now. I recommend Apple Valley Animal Hospital 100%.

Please if your pet has an emergency don’t take them there. They don’t care. Took my 1 yr old cat due to couple abscess and fever which was high. I was told he was getting those abscess removed, clean, was being put on fluids since he was dehydrated, and was told he was staying overnight. Even though my cat was with a fever and looked sad he was still walking and moving around. That same day the doctor called me saying that he was stable, doing much better, that blood work came back good, that no X-rays where needed and that I was able to pick him up that same evening. When I picked him up he wasn’t moving just laying there and I was told that it was due to the anesthesia and pain medication. I was given medication to give him once he was able to eat. Took him home and he was like that all night, therefore next morning I called the doctor back and told them that he was still not able to move, wasn’t able to drink or eat and that his paws were really cold. They told me not to give him any more pain medication because it was making drowsy but I told that I haven’t been able to give him anything because he wasn’t eating, then was told that according to the doctor it was better to take him to a neurologist in Ontario because of the high fever he had. I asked to please check him again because he wasn’t moving and that I was worried told them if they can check his temperature and but him back in fluids. I was told I can take him back and they can check his temperature. Took him back and all they did was checked his temperature which according to them was good and that all they can do is refer me to the neurologist. Well my cat passed away that same evening he didn’t make it to the neurologist. If they would’ve done their job they would’ve noticed that he was in critical condition and maybe I could’ve put him down to avoid his suffering. They lied he was not stable and better when I picked him up, he was worst. They should have kept him longer under fluids and observation. They were just trying to rush get him out of there by the end of the day and bill me. Which they ended up billing me for xrays after the doctor said it wasn’t necessary, they billed me for medication that I wasn’t able to use. His last 12-18 hours were the worst for him, for my kids and myself.
