How to Save Money at Foothills Animal Hospital Emergency and Specialty Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Foothills has been treating my pets for the two years that I have lived in Yuma. My pets get quality care every visit. My Dalmatian’s skin has improved thanks to Dr. Skaggs. And my cat had his lymph nodes tested, thankfully everything was benign, and Dr. Kelland was so gentle with him. The doctors are very knowledgeable and informative, and the technicians have compassion for every animal that walks through their doors. 10/10 would recommend their clinic.

We had a very pleasant experience. At first we called our vet, they said the could only handle issues as they arrived. Got in contact with the hospital, come to find out our puppy had fractures and whipped the tip of her tail open (multiple times previously). Vet recommended tail amputation to help prevent further issues and further pain. We agreed. Staff was very professional, courteous, and checked in with us after surgery and the morning the next day. Let me know she ate and the staff was falling in love with our puppers. Came in under budget too! We are so happy with their services and level of care!

Foothills is the best animal hospital in the southwest. They saved my dog’s life as she was fading fast not knowing she developed diabetes. They take good care of her each time she visits for general glucose testing and we are thrilled they are now our go to vet care. It’s worth the 45 minute drive to have the confidence my dogs are well taken care of. I highly recommend them.

The Vet didn't talk down to me. I so appreciated that. I've had dogs all my life. I do understand dogs. She talked with me, not to me. I would go back to Foothills anytime. Plus it was very clean.

An emergency hospital is not a place anyone wants to visit but we're thankful they are there when your furrbaby needs help. We needed their help twice in the past 2 months. The first visit was with our elderly chug who took a sudden turn for the worse in one day. She couldn't keep any food down and was just sick, sick, sick. We called our vet who is located in another city and they recommended we bring her to the emergency hospital. We called Foothills Animal Hospital and they were able to get her in right away. Upon arrival, we were taken to a room where she was examined, stabilized and evaluated. Unfortunately, we had to make the hard decision to let her go. The staff was wonderful, kind and we felt confident in their knowledge. Fast forward to our second visit which occurred 10 weeks later when our 10 1/2 year old mini dachshund stopped eating and was obviously not well. We called Foothills Animal Hospital at 7am and was able to get an appointment for that morning. Making the appointment saved us a few $ on the visit and ensured we would be able to get our furrbaby into a room right away. Our doxie was evaluated and the doctor recommended a few tests. Rather than run every test to jack up the price, we were advised which testing was most important. The doctor had it right and we only needed that first test in order to determine what was going on with our baby. We had no choice but to let our beautiful doxie go as well. There was no cure for her condition and she would only suffer if we didn't let her go now. While I wish our visits to Foothills Animal Hospital had happy endings, I am confident that our doggies received the best of care. The entire staff was kind to us and our doggies. On a side note, we learned that the doctors are brought in from other cities to provide care to Yumans who need emergency care for their pets. We had 2 doctors who were extremely knowledgeable and loved their job. We are very thankful that we had a team of professionals to help us with both of our dogs while other vets could not see us.
