How to Save Money at Valley Animal Hospital: Vagnetti Jr John D DVM

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I showed up after midnight with a very sick dog. They were busy but still made time for us. We thought she'd ingested something and while she had, it wasn't the reason for her illness. She had a mesenteric torsion which has an incredibly low survivability rate. The team there identified that surgery would be the best option to help her and got her on an operating table in 5 hours even though they were incredibly busy. It's nearly 1 week later and my once listless, sick pup is now back to her happy self (plus a cone). She was hospitalized for two days post surgery and they give me updates twice per day. I was fortunate that most of my updates were: "She's doing great. But she did try to eat her e-collar, IV, catheter, etc. We will be doing xyz, and you'll receive another call for the next shift." They saved my dog's life. It was not cheap. Emergency services for people are even worse. And as long and agonizing as that time sitting in that waiting room was plus the week of follow up at-home care, it's a small price to pay to have a happy healthy (and nearly fully healed) dog. Do keep in mind, if you are walking in, this is an emergency vet center with emergency waits and costs. There are urgent centers, your local vet and 24 pet help lines that can likely help with non-critical issues or advise if you need to go.

I took my rabbit in a year ago due to her head tilting to the side and throwing her balance off, after ONLY LOOKING at her for what felt like a minute, they said they couldn't help her. They immediately wanted to put my poor Picasso down. I refused and asked them if i could try medication first. After $300, they sent me away with ear drops and some oral medication for her. I immediately went somewhere else for a second opinion because Picasso was still eating and drinking. Needless to say, ARIZONA SMALL ANIMAL CLINIC was able to save my baby. I walked in and as soon as Dr. ShanAnne Edwards DMV saw Picasso, she instantly had an idea of what it was and sure enough, she was correct. I will never trust Valley Animal Hospital with any of my pets. I would rather spend every penny and go else where. Instead of admitting they didn't know what was wrong, they just wanted to make the money and sedate my poor Picasso. Arizona Small Animal Clinic is always welcoming and doesn't instantly jump to wanting to put your fur babies down. I'd trust them with my life. Don't waste your time going to Valley Animal Hospital. Picasso is still thriving today, thanks to ARIZONA SMALL ANIMAL CLINIC!!!

They treated my my chinchilla Saga with such love. They let me hold him as long as I wanted before he was put to sleep. Everyone there was amazing and I picked a great cremation package and now have a gorgeous wood urn box and a stone with his footsie prints pressed in and his name. They made it as easy for me as it could be.

My German Shepherd puppy was bit in the face by a rattlesnake. We came in on emergency basis and they were able to see us right away. They were very kind and took the time to explain everything that was going on to me and in a way that I could understand. They were also very patient and answered all of my questions. The price tag for leaving my dog with them for 24 hours was simply out of our range. So, we discussed alternatives and I was able to take my dog home after they were sure she was stable. This cut our bill by more than half. I promised to bring her back the next day for a checkup. Which I did. She has made an amazingly fast recovery and thanks to their help, she is now as good as new. I typically am very fussy about who I take my dogs to. I won't tolerate vets that do not treat my animals with respect or those who try and force me into unnecessarily expensive or invasive procedures. Honestly, I was all set to go to battle when I had to bring my puppy in. However, every single person had VCA animal hospital seemed genuinely interested, kind, and respectful to both me and why beloved dog. I can't recommend this emergency veterinary service enough. I've been to two others in Tucson and was definitely not impressed. This one's a winner. I hope we never need an emergency vet, but if we do, this is where we will definitely bring hour fur babies.
