How to Save Money at Sun Lakes Chandler Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Coco became very ill while we were traveling this summer. She had to have emergency surgery while in Montana and it was determined that she had serious liver issues. We came home so she could be seen. The tech at SLAC (wish I could remember his name) recognized right away that Coco was very scared. He got on the floor and did all of his work at her level. Even a towel with pheromones to calm her. Lots of love and kisses were shared. Dr Barber spent lots of time reviewing the records I had brought from the Dr we saw while traveling and she did an extensive exam of Coco. Dr Barber did not do unnecessary tests or lab work. She immediately said she could do an ultrasound but did not have the expertise to determine the issue so she wouldn’t do it. Instead she referred us to a specialist. We have gone to Sun Lakes Chandler Animal Clinic for 3 1/2 years and have always been very pleased with their expertise and loving care of our babies.

My dog had an ear infection and my regular vet blew us off, so Sun Lakes was the first place I called pretty much expecting the same outcome, due to a dog they’d never seen, being the holidays, etc. However, a friendly voice answered the phone and got us in the next day at a perfect time! Dr. Carpenter was very kind and gentle with my extremely nervous doodle. The best part was that I wasn’t made to feel bad or pressured into anything during the visit and the cost was reasonable. My boy is feeling great again and I’m taking all my business to Sun Lakes. They have three new patients! Update on this review. One of my geriatric Havanese developed a skin issue and I wasn’t able to handle it at home. I called this morning (6/2/23) around 9 and was offered an appointment at 2. At 11, the office called and advised they could see old Ed at 1. He’s feeling much better tonight. Kristi and Dr. Greenway were so awesome.

Brought our 12 year old dog who was constant drooling and had a hard time eating. Turned out he had cancer on his tongue and we had to put him down, we were able to be with him in a nice room while they injected him and loved him while we could. He is now in heaven with his brother who we lost last month. God bless and love our pups!

Sun Lakes Vet has always, ALWAYS provided exceptional care, and for as long as I live in AZ, I will never take my pets anywhere else. They give my pets so much love and are so friendly, even when my German is being a total anxiety riddled German LOL. Everyone is so good to her. My cat passed away a year ago and Sun Lakes handled the post-mortem care. The amount of love that I felt from them for my sweet girl Maiden through the package they made me was absolutely astonishing. Misty created a beautiful plaque with Maidens paw print on it and added some gems and charms and it was just amazing. They also all wrote us a card that was filled with more than just "sorry for your loss", but instead heartfelt love for Miss Maiden herself. A truly touching experience. 1000000/10 recommend taking your furry loved ones here. They really care.

We have had 2 separate incidents with 2 of our dogs recently and they were able to get us in next day which is awesome since most vets are weeks out. Really like that they have time available just to do a consult and get a collar or something temporary until it can be attended to fully. The staff is all very friendly and understanding of different situations. They have won us over as fuurrever customers.
