How to Save Money at Southwest Veterinary Surgical Service, PC

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

From the moment Omaha & I entered the reception area we were comfortable even though there were other dogs in the area. That makes a huge difference in Omaha’s comfort for his entire experience . It is important. The staff were knowledgeable about his clinical problem, verified it, proposed surgical treatment/described process, clinical objectives, etc. Doctors, clinical & “administrative” staff are excellent ; work as a team. Omaha is “pain free”, & more active than he has ever been! Thank you Omaha

Amazing! My dog is a tripod (back leg) and he started to have some walking issues. They worked with us over a 2 years keeping an eye on him and trying to find the best ways to help him before being forced to go the surgical route. We were finally forced to go the surgical route due to him tearing his ligament. They did amazing. He unfortunately managed to break his plate from the first surgery and so they squeezed us in for a last minute surgery to get a new one put in, which was amazing since it was the same day we found out it broke. The plate breaking wasn’t their fault. Our dog jumped and broke his fibula which lead to the plate breaking and nothing anyone could have done to prevent that. Overall I would highly recommend them for anything you need. They took such good care of us and Dr. Dixon and all the staff were amazing and so sweet. My dog cedar was so well taken care of and loved on we always felt comfortable going there. As a mom with a tripod dog I’m very careful who I bring him to due to more medical needs he has and I can’t recommend this place enough

I cant say too much about the professionalism, compassion, and skill set of Southwest Veterinary Surgical Service. We all know how difficult the decision is to operate on our pets especially a Spleen removal. The entire staff was compassionate, understanding of our situation, and most of all patient with all our questions. We had a difficult time finalizing our decision and I cant express enough how caring and informative the entire staff was right down to the surgeon. Communication was amazing throughout the whole process and the night vet tech sent us pictures and updates on his condition every step of the way. We could not have felt our dog Mac was in better hands. I cant express enough in this review our gratitude for the care and service we received. Thinking about the surgery and writing this review still brings tears to my eyes. Mac is doing great a week after his surgery! Bless them all.

Our beautiful sweet senior girl Ladybug had developed a lump on her rear leg and it scared us greatly. We took her to see an awesome very caring veterinarian who recommended three surgery facilities. I chose SW Veterinary for location initially as I was familiar with the nearby Emergency Vet facility. But our first appointment with Dr. Sullivan and his staff made me feel very confident that Ladybug would be in the best possible place to get her lump removed. I went with my gut as I always do. I am so glad I did. Their skilled hands removed the lump so well there's no evidence it was ever there. She came home that same day thankfully as she is very needy and absolutely can't stand to be without her people and let everyone know she wanted to go home. We couldn't stand to be without her either. The staff made sure we went home with enough adhesive pads/supplies to replace her pads each day as she healed up. They made sure I knew what to expect and how to contact them during the holiday hours. We can't imagine life without our beautiful rescue Ladybug. I would have done anything to give her the chance to survive this cancerous lump. I'm beyond thankful and grateful for the talented surgeons and super caring staff at SW Veterinary for saving her life. If you love your pets and want to do everything you can to help them to live as long as possible, take them to SW Veterinary Surgical Service.

They were so caring and supportive. They fixed my girls leg when they thought there wasn’t a very good chance. I am deeply grateful for this practice! I would highly recommend them!!
