How to Save Money at Phoenix Veterinary Referral & Emergency Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We just moved here from Oklahoma and unfortunately had to take my 14 year old yorkie in for what we thought was a large cut in one of her hind legs late in the evening. They were so kind, caring and gave me the very truthful answer which was it will heal on its own. They could have recommended a million things that weren’t necessary and I would have folded in vulnerability and paid whatever the cost was, but they didn’t. I am thankful for the honesty, transparency, and wonderful experience. I was expecting to pay 10x what they charged me. Sincerely, thank you to these amazing people. We will be back for all of our pet needs.

We received NO COMMUNICATION and no treatment was provided by the vet after we waited over 2 hours. We came home to find our dog bleeding on her shoulder. We arrived to this location and within 30 minutes an employee took our dog back, checked her vitals and then brought her back to us. We waited in the nearly empty waiting room for over 90 minutes (only one other person was there for over an hour and was seen and left; two other people arrived to visit their pet and were helped within 15 minutes). At 2 hours, 15 minutes we asked for an update. The receptionist checked and said at least another 45 minutes but that was just an estimate and there were more critical care patients being seen. The bleeding had stopped so we decided to take our dog home - she was hungry and needed to use the bathroom. We are disappointed by the complete lack of communication. It would have been useful to tell us if an assessment had been made that she wasn’t in need of emergency care so we could have taken her home earlier. At no point did any employee tells us we were looking at a 3-4 hour wait. As we left the receptionist said we can return in the morning. Why in the world would we return to wait again when our dog is clearly not a priority? We will take her to her regular vet. If we need emergency services in the future, we will be driving farther from home and hopefully receive better communication and actual treatment.

I came to this clinic in an emergency with my beloved cat. I'm not sure of the technical terms, but he had a blood clot or something to that effect and he was in a lot of pain and nothing could be done, but to put him to sleep. I had never stepped foot in this clinic, and I came in as a complete mess. I can't convey enough how professional, but at the same time how comforting they were to me. It has been awhile since I lost my baby and I have only now been able to write this review. I cannot express enough how much I appreciate them and their care at such a difficult time, and I can't thank the staff enough.

My dog gave us a scare in the early morning, thank goodness for the PHX Vet. They took care of her right away. She's ok now. Very reassuring, friendly, helpful and respectful. The clinic is amazingly clean and I was expecting to pay 2d what we paid. Thank goodness for their honesty. Thank you PHX Vet

Thank you so much for everything you did for and are doing for Willow! We honestly don't have enough words to thank you enough. We were sure that we were going to loose her, but you were not only able to save her, her recovery has been amazing. Pauline and the rest of the tech staff have worked hard for her!
