How to Save Money at Canyon Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Roxy Leslie is a deeply caring and highly competent vet whom we entrust the health of our 4 felines. Several of them have had health issues lately, and thanks to Dr. Leslie, we are successfully managing these issues and the kitties are doing so much better as a result. He also has this endearing way of saying "The Kid" (in American Southern accent) when referring to one of our cats. Dr. Leslie is supported by a wonderful staff as well. The Kid (pictured) also appreciates Dr. Leslie's care and would give him a thumb's up, if he were polydactyl.

Been going to Canyon for many years, since Dr Foster days. 1st visit with Dr Leslie and his team. They fit me in the same day I called. I just needed vaccinations for my dog's license plate renewal. Everyone was outstanding, Dr Leslie spent quite a long time getting to know us (for a busy vet!) Thanks to all there Highest recommendation!

I would recommend Dr. Roxy. My dog has been a patient at this clinic since 2016. I was very happy with the previous husband and wife vet team Mr. & Mrs. Hehn, so caring and great with the pets and owners. Was disappointed to learn of their selling and moving, but decided to form my own opinion about the new owner. My dog is 16 and has congestive heart failure, so I am very concerned about his care. I live in a different town apprx 175 miles away, but am in Phoenix often. Today was the second visit and I am pleased with Dr. Roxy and will continue to visit his clinic. He takes the time to thoroughly examine and treat my dog. Only issue I had was not being able to continue getting the precise type of heart pill at his clinic that is not difficult to give my dog, but I found them at an online pharmacy and he sent a prescription. I also have a vet in the town I am at most of the time, both vets know he goes to both clinics and this works well for us.

If you ever take heed to a review, let it be this one. This place is a disgrace. A money grab and nothing else. The staff is the least caring, least knowledgeable and least focused I’ve ever seen. And I’ve had 6 personal dogs and 164 fosters in the last decade, so I’m familiar with veterinarians. If you’re in Flagstaff, I’d sincerely recommend any other vet. They missed a diagnosis of my first dog, resulting in his death. I was forced to take my 2nd dog there only because she was having seizures throughout the night and I had no other choice. They let her suffer while coming up with a quote that was OUTRAGEOUS. They did nothing but give her an IV and pills. Zero instruction, diagnosis or recommendations. She died the next day and my personal vet says she could’ve been saved if they cared enough to do their jobs. Please take this to heart and go ANYWHERE else. This place is trash that survives off of being the only option during off hours. They should all be ashamed of themselves.

Very caring Vet. He gave me excellent information to keep me informed on how to care for my puppy and eventually did an A+ neutering surgery for ZiggyBear. Everyone is superior at their job from the front desk on to he surgery room. I travel 30 miles passing many other vet to come here. The trip is definitely worth the travel.
