How to Save Money at Aspen Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My 11 month old cocker spaniel became critically ill suddenly on a Sunday. Dr Dickerson was beyond fabulous. Dillon had to stay over 3 nights. The staff was extremely helpful. We have a long recovery but I feel confident everything is being done that can be. I was kept informed and allowed to visit. I was called after he came home and asked “how is our boy doing “. There was talk of transporting him to Phoenix but a call was made to confirm he was getting everything he needed here in flagstaff at Aspen Vet. I am extremely grateful.

We were traveling through the area and needed help for our dog who had two weeks of tummy distress. They were able to see us quickly and gave a thorough exam and walked through treatment options with us. It was refreshing to not just be sold the most extensive options, but given levels of diagnostics to choose from. The technician and Dr. Lesser showed great compassion for our very nervous and stressed out pup. I wish they were in my hometown! Many thanks for helping us in a pinch!

Every person I have interacted with here has been nothing short of nice and professional! They treat my dog with such care and truly are a joy to work with. I recently moved an hour away but still make the trip up because I’ve never found such a great vets office. I’ve been to a few other offices in Flagstaff and Aspen is by far the best! Their hours are incredibly helpful for someone who works during the week, and they are so attentive over the phone. I honestly don’t have anything bad to say about the wonderful people who work here!

I just moved to the area with my two cats and one had not gone potty in a few days, so I took her to Aspen and was disappointed in the experience we had. She is 5lbs, very tiny, and honestly the sweetest thing if you give her time to warm up to you. She hissed at the vet (because she was scared) and the vet acted nervous and didn't hold her or try to build rapport with her at all. I understand the vet not wanting to get scratched or whatever, but it's also their job to properly care for animals. I just really expected more. Our last vet took the time to build a relationship with my baby girl and it was extremely helpful and necessary in her care. Not to mention, I had to wait forever in the lobby and then in the exam room. Which neither myself or my cat are use to and I believe it led to her being more nervous and scared. The only reason I gave 3 stars is because the vet tech was actually very nice and the clinic itself was extremely clean and well maintained. But all in all, I don't recommend this vet for someone with a cat. Maybe a dog, the vet seemed friendlier with the dogs they saw.

Great customer service all around, and they always seem to make us a priority. We started going to them when our pup decided to jump out of a car on a Sunday. They got us right in, and we have gone to them ever since. Would recommend to anyone looking for an amazing vet clinic!
