How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My sister and I recently took her cat to Banfield Pet Hospital in Chandler, AZ, after a hairline fracture was discovered in her cat's leg—a fracture that had been missed by another vet just a few days earlier. The visit turned out to be a highly positive experience, thanks to Dr. Kirk, who has been our trusted vet for the past year. Dr. Kirk’s expertise and compassion truly shine. She quickly noticed the fracture that was previously overlooked, demonstrating an incredible attention to detail and a deep understanding of animal care. (If ever x rays are taken for your pet, please have a second pair of eyes go over them.) Her knowledge, combined with her warm, compassionate approach, made the entire visit feel reassuring, even in a stressful situation. It’s clear that she genuinely cares about the animals she treats, and it’s been evident in every visit. Banfield itself was clean, welcoming, and efficient. Kiley, the vet technician made us feel that our cat would get the best care possible and our cat did. They took the cat to back to apply a splint to his injured leg. We didn’t have to wait long for our appointment. This was our first experience at this location, but Dr. Kirk’s thoroughness and ability to explain things in an understandable way make her stand out. I highly recommend Banfield Pet Hospital in Chandler, especially Dr. Kirk, who has truly been a lifesaver for our cats. Whether you're seeking routine care or need a more specialized examination, this team provides excellent care. We're grateful for Dr. Kirk’s diligence and expertise in ensuring our pets get the treatment they need.

I have worked with company in the past with no issues, so maybe it is just this location. Went online and scheduled 2 appoints for 2/3/25 for 2 and 3 pm for both of my dogs. Sunday morning, I was called to confirm the 3pm appointment and when I asked about the 2pm appointment, they said I never made one. I told them I made the appointments online, of which, I was told it must of glitched. I expressed that I had an email confirmation for 2pm, so how could there be a glitch? I was told the surgeon might still be in surgery and may not be available at that time. I was then put on hold and another person got on the phone and repeated the same thing. I was not offered anything besides, you can wait till the surgeon is done followed by, so what do you want to do? I was a bit frustrated since I was not offered to bring in both dogs at 3pm and instead decided to cancel my appointments. I should had known better. I had previously worked at this location and they had their heads so far up then as they do know, I shouldn't be surprised. Sadly, this is a common theme with PetSmart and Banfield in the Phoenix market and I would not advise anyone go this location, schedule online, or attempt to do any business with them. Better to go to local companies, not corporations.

Friendly front desk person patiently answers all your question. Dr. Hobin takes time to discuss about the diagnostics, treatment and general health of the fur babies. Its a pleasure to visit this place.

I could over look the expensive prices this clinic charges IF I thought my dog was getting quality care. However they have proven they can not provide that. Besides the complete chaos that is there scheduling system. I originally made an appointment because my dog had soft stools. They had what appeared to be small chunks in them. Which I’ve come to find out believe was collgen from some bones I’d been giving him but had stopped once I stopped giving them to him although his stool was still a little loose. I told them that but they insisted on giving him a deworming treatment just in case. I dropped him off that morning and picked him up just before closing and they said they could not get a stool sample from him. They also gave me back a the full baggie of dog food. claiming they could not get him to eat. Now I’m sure many dogs can not eat when anxious or overstimulated but I promise you my dog NEVER turns down food. So as odd as that was I trusted the vet. They sent him back home with an antibiotic for 7 days. Unfortunately I had to leave for 2 weeks due to a family emergency so I had him stay with a friend. When I returned he still had soft stools, but now had a rash on his hind LEG and his ears seem to be bothering him. So I took him in again. I was concerned his food the vet didn’t seem too concerned about that but did recommend a different food for me to try since I was concerned. Anyway that day we got ear drops and wipes for the rash but the vet insisted he had a rash in his groin area. I had no idea what she was talking about and I said I think it’s his leg. And she said it’s actually mostly in his groin area not his leg. This confused me as I did not see a rash in his groin area but he does have a weird pattern on his belly. He’s had it since we got him. And I just thought maybe that was the rash and I just didn’t realize. I felt like a bad pet owner. Fast forward. 3 days later the rash from his leg has gotten worse and now he really did have a rash in his groin area. But I believe form the wipes. It was no longer just the light and dark patterned but red raised bumps that he was continually trying to bite at now. So I called the vets office and they said they would discuss with the vet and give me a call later that day to tell me if I should bring him in or not. I never got a call back. I will say that the staff was very nice and I was able to get his flea/ heart worm medication from this vets so that’s why they get the second star.

Dr. Phan, is wonderful, as is the staff. The prices are a bit out of what should be for a wellness plan. I've been this plan for well over a decade, and the total for what I have paid far exceeds the cost of the services my Gemma dog has been given. Do some research for yourself.
