How to Save Money at BluePearl Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am one of those people whose dogs are kid-level meaningful, so finding good care is paramount. One of my dogs, Frida, was bitten by a snake back in September - just as we were about to head to sleep. Since emergency vets were the only option, we went to the closest one to our home first, which was in Trussville. I love those folks out there, but they had had so many snake bites that weekend that they were out of the antivenin, so we were off to spot #2. Next, we went to Steel City in Hoover, and our experience there was pretty terrible. I know some people have had great things to say, but for whatever reason, the staff that night was not on their A-game -- on top of wanting to charge $3,600 in a pretty ridiculous pay structure. After going home and doing some Googling, I decided third time would be a charm and rushed Frida over to BluePearl. I hadn't heard of this pet hospital before, but I was desperate to get her good help, and I felt like I was in the right place immediately. There are two entrances, so I had to call to be sure I was trying to come in the correct one (the main door faces Belk), and the girls on the phone were so kind and helpful. The facility itself was modern, clean, and quiet. Granted, it was around 1:30am at this point, but there was no music blaring or dogs barking wildly, and the staff all spoke calmly, which was a great help during a scary time. Dr. Vollenweider was extremely accommodating and clear in his communications. He let me ask all my dumb questions and explained things thoroughly for close to a half an hour, along with multiple other check-ins. Frida was cared for swiftly, and despite the fact that I couldn't physically be with her while she received treatment, I felt clued-in to what was going on every step of the way, and not once did anyone suggest I went home and left her there (I'm someone who just wouldn't ever do that, and it means a lot to me that they seemed to understand that). We left there about 4:30am, and Frida was obviously not feeling her best, but she looked a heck of a lot better than she did when we came in, and we paid a fraction of what Steel City had been aiming to charge. Emergency Discharge Instructions were provided on paper for me, and also forwarded to my primary vet, which I thought was a really nice touch. It saved me having to call and try to explain everything the next day, when Frida and I were sleep deprived and resting most of the day. I'm so grateful to have ended up at BluePearl, and it will be my FIRST stop if after-hours care is needed in the future for either of my pups! THANK YOU to Dr. Vollenweider and staff!! (And I'm sorry again to anyone who had to withstand her toots that night - they were truly unprecedentedly rank.) Frida is feeling much better now :D

We can't not say enough about BluePearl pet hospital in Hoover. If you ever have to take your pet to the ER this is the place to go. All of the staff are amazing. We unfortunately had to take our 6 month old Dalmatian in for coughing to find out she has pneumonia. Dr. Tolbert was great explaining everything to us what we needed to look for and how to treat. He even worked with us to bring her back to check on her to make sure it didn't turn more serious after a week and then 12 days later when she needed more meds. They really went out of their way to make us always feel comfortable. The front desk staff, techs and vets are simply the best. Torre says thank you!!!!! John and Amy Haskins.

My Chihuahua was recently bitten by a snake and I am so thankful for the care she received at Blue Pearl in Hoover. After an overnight stay and treatment she is now back home and doing well continuing to heal. The first encounter I had with a veterinarian there was not good. He may be a very skilled doctor but it was overshadowed by his poor communication skills. Speaking with him made the stress my son and I felt so much worse. He came across as unsure and lacking in confidence. The pattern of his speech and every thing he said made us feel he was about to drop a bomb on us yet never did. I became very frustrated and angry. He left the room and I thought treatment was beginning so I checked with the girl at front desk to see if I could leave and get coffee across the street. Within a few minutes he phoned asking “did you just leave?” I told him I checked with girl at desk and was across the street getting coffee. I asked if I needed to leave and the way he responded with “ I need you to return right now” panicked me and prompted me to ask if my dog had died. Upon re-entering, the girl at desk, Kayla, could read my frustration and had another veterinarian speak with us. Dr. Adkins is amazing!!!!! He made me feel completely comfortable and after just a few minutes I knew my little girl was in caring and competent, capable hands. The relief I felt was immediate. The staff is is very compassionate. From what I understand they held my baby girl in their arms for most of her stay as she was anxious and vocal and calmed when held. That’s going above and beyond and very much appreciated. Thank you, thank you Dr. Adkins, Chloe and Kayla!!!!! And thank you to all the others involved in her care that I didn’t get to meet❤️
