How to Save Money at Madison Veterinary Emergency

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My daughter and her boyfriend took their dog Frank to this office. They didn't do blood work and pushed for the expensive x-rays. They told them he had gas. They ended up having to take him back, again no blood work. Pushed for more x-rays. They carried him to their vet when it opened. They did blood work first. The blood work revealed it was his kidneys. Because they repeatedly failed to do the most basic diagnostic test they had to put Frank down. These people just want your money.

Saturday, 05/20/23, was my first visit to the Madison Veterinary Emergency clinic. Unfortunately, I had to take one of my babies there to allow her to go Home to Heaven. She had been diagnosed with bladder cancer a few months ago, and had gone blind very shortly after that. On Saturday, she had all but given up, and I made the decision, although a very difficult one to make, to allow her to be at peace, no more suffering, pain, or fear. The staff at Madison Veterinary Emergency were wonderful to myself and more importantly to my dear, sweet Penelope. They were very attentive, showed great compassion to me and my baby, and were very professional. Although it was a very tough time for us, the staff at the clinic made it as comfortable for all of us as possible. I highly recommend Madison Veterinary Emergency, and want to say thank you to all of the staff for the care and kindness we were shown. I will not forget it. Thank you again.

We had to rush our french bulldog mama and puppies here. The veterinarian lady new so much about french bulldogs. We felt very comfortable leaving our babies here. Jasmine was awesome and so sweet and helped us alot. Stephanie and Heather were very patient with me every time I called. These clinics are after hours and cost more money , but you cant put a price on your fur babies. This place will be our second vet.

I rushed my very sick dog there only to find a note on the door saying that they are closed. I would have greatly appreciated that information on the outgoing message when I called ahead. The alternate emergency vet they said to call is only open until 5:30am and it was impossible to get there in time. Hopefully, my dog doesn't die before her regular vet opens. A little heads up can literally mean life or death for our believed pets. Do better.

Nobody ever wants to go to an emergency vet, but my dog decided to have a serious issue on a Saturday afternoon when my regular vet is closed. I called ahead and the receptionist was very helpful, even letting me know the wait time might be significant because they were very busy that day. I definitely appreciated that notification. When we arrived, we were placed in an exam room pretty quickly where my dog was able to wait in peace without the comings and goings of the waiting room. This was fantastic, because my dog was in so much pain, I just wanted a quiet place for her to rest. Alternatively, the receptionist gave us the option of waiting in my car and she would notify us when it was our turn (another good option, but my dog was struggling to move so I didn’t want to load her up again). We did have to wait quite a while to see the doctor, but I was told that up front before I decided to come, so I was prepared for that. I could also hear the doctor and staff hustling from one patient to another, so it wasn’t like employees were just standing around doing nothing—they were really busy that day. Dr. Moyers treated my dog, and was very kind and professional. The exam and test options were explained to me, including prices, before I agreed to them. Dr. Moyers and the staff were gentle with my dog and seemed to genuinely care about finding out what was wrong and how to help her. Dr. Moyers is direct and efficient, but she also took the time to answer a few questions I had. Yes, the price tag hurts for the visit and treatment, but that’s to be expected at an emergency clinic. Ultimately, I received really good care for my dog, and she’s doing much better on the treatment plan we were given. The doctor and all the staff were extremely professional and seemed to actually care about the work they were doing. I would recommend this clinic to help you if you have an after hours emergency.
