How to Save Money at After Hours Veterinary Emergency Clinic Inc

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My Boxer was suffering some severe health issues and at 4am it became painfully clear she couldn't wait until our Vet opened and would need to be put to sleep immediately. I called in and they took all our information and were ready to address everything she would need before I left my house. When we showed up they let us in immediately and when she was unable to stay on the scale alone they let my husband hold her to keep her calm and safe then just subtracted his at the end. The vet came out within 3 minutes and administered a sedative, then she allowed 4 of us to hold our girl the entire time she was being tended to. When our girl was gone they let us stay as long as we wanted and the tech walked us through everything and was extremely patient and thorough. They made what was one of the most painful mornings as easy as possible for us and my girl, and I will always be thankful for that.

There when I needed them at 5 am. Rehydrated, controlled pain, listened to my concerns, gentle and understanding with my pet, had equipment on hand to run diagnostics and ensure appropriate care, and made recommendations for follow-up and explained their communication with regular vet. Effective communication strategies with stressed, worried, exhausted humans. Some reviews mention the facilities; I'm sure if the vet had run a standard practice she would have the means to bling up the lobby. I prefer that funds go into the equipment and supplies so they are there when needed, rather than a pleather couch in the lobby. When my pet was in pain, she was there. That's all that mattered to me. Grateful for this facility, and for her decades of being there for the community when we need her the most. We will be fortunate if someone else picks up the mantle when she decides to set it down.

amazing. my dog was vomiting for two days and i thought it was stress as we had just adopted him but he threw up brown and it smelled like feces and my mind immediately went to the worst case scenario. i called and the lady on the phone was so calm and listened to me rapidly spitting out the words i could muster in my panic. when we got there we filled out the paperwork and they let us sit in our car (limited patients in clinic due to covid i assume) we made it in and they were so sweet with my boy and very calm and were very patient with me as my grammar and thoughts were not working the way they would in a normal situation. they were so patient and kind with my boy and worked with my price range as i couldn’t afford much but they did their absolute best to help me. they were amazing. although a horrible situation to be in as a pet owner, they made it the most welcoming and comforting environment for both me and my boy. thank you guys! (my dog is alright now and back to his normal self!)

Worst vet in town. Took my elderly cat there last year because he was no longer able to pee due to urinary crystals and was visibly in a ton of pain. We rushed to the only vet clinic available at 11pm in hopes that they could make him feel better. Long story short, the vet my cat was put with was aggressive and very uncaring with him, not to mention us as well. The solution they gave us was to pump him full of fluids so he could be cleared of the crystals naturally. Because, you know, giving a cat that hasn't peed in days even MORE fluids is a perfectly wise choice! We took him home around two hours later and his condition only worsened. The next morning we called Mt. McKinley Animal Hospital as soon as they opened so we could get a second opinion. They were able to squeeze my cat in even though they had a full schedule. They were so kind to him, and you could tell they really valued his wellbeing. He stayed there for multiple days getting treatment (such as draining all of the fluids this vet put into him in the first place.) We were told that if he had been left untreated for even a couple more days he would have died. He's since had a perfect recovery and is back to himself 100%. I would recommend literally ANY other vet in Fairbanks. This one only cares about money. So incredibly sad to read other reviews saying their pets died due to this place's treatment (or lack thereof.) Please do not waste your money here. I hope the doctor that treated him no longer works here.

The vet and staff at the after hours vet were so kind, professional, and knowledgeable when we had to bring our dog in. This clinic is a great asset for pet owners in Fairbanks when emergencies arise. Their cost transparency is nice too.
