Common Foods In Your Kitchen That Dogs Can’t Eat
Posted: 12/28/2022 | BY: Katrina Shedden | Categories: Dog , Health problems , Pet care
I gave my dog a piece of a carrot one time, and now whenever I eat them, he runs over, somehow recognizing the crunch. For being a 15 lb oversized chihuahua, I was surprised he was interested in a carrot at all, but some dogs will eat anything. But while we love letting our dogs taste-test kitchen items from carrots to oranges, it is important to know that there are some common foods in your kitchen that dogs can’t eat, without experiencing symptoms ranging anywhere from discomfort to dangerous.
As the cold weather brings us all indoors for longer periods of time, you may find yourself doling out a few more treats to your pet than usual throughout the day. Be it from boredom or as a way of appeasing your pup for having to stay indoors. Whatever the reason, it may also be tempting to let your dog taste some new things. Like whatever it is you’re eating. Which can be perfectly safe for some foods in small amounts. But there are also foods that can be dangerous, even life-threatening, to your pet if eaten. And it’s crucial for every pet owner to know what these food are and how your pup may react to them.
Foods that dogs can’t eat
Grapes
Grapes, as well as raisins, are toxic to dogs. Even a small amount can cause kidney damage and can lead to kidney failure. Their bodies cannot digest these tiny fruits. It is recommended that if your dog does eat a grape, take it to the vet immediately.
Avocado
Avocados are known to make dogs sick. Even a small piece can cause diarrhea and even breathing problems, especially for small dogs. You don’t want to give them any part of the avocado – from the skin to the seed.
Tomatoes
Ripe tomatoes can be okay, but unripe tomatoes contain ‘tomatine’ which is not healthy for dogs. Tomatine can cause kidney damage, cause digestive issues, and even affect the nervous system. If you have a garden, it is smart to have fencing around it so that your dog cannot take a munch of your unripe tomatoes on the vine.
Onions
Onions are not good for dogs, whether cooked or raw. They are hard for them to digest and can even cause damage to red blood cells. This includes chives, too. Onions are not good for cats, either. It is also known that Japanese dog breeds, such as Shiba Inus, are especially reactive to onions.
Seeds and Stones
While you may be tempted to let your dog chew on an apple core, this is not healthy for them. Seeds and stones of fruits and veggies contain cyanide which is not good for them. It is best to not give them any seeds or stones, just as you wouldn’t eat them.
Foods your dog can eat
Apples
Apples are rich in nutrients and vitamins A and C. They also contain fiber which is good for digestion and is low in fat. However, they do contain sugar. So if your dog needs to avoid sugar, then avoid apples. Just never give them the seeds or the core. And small bites are the best for them to chew.
Blueberries
Blueberries are a known superfood because they are rich in antioxidants that help cell damage for humans as well as dogs. They also contain fiber. Not all dogs will like the sour taste, but if your dog is a fan, blueberries make a healthy treat.
Cucumbers
Cucumbers are okay for dogs to eat and can be a great snack for overweight dogs since they are low-calorie and mostly water. These healthy veggies are loaded with vitamins, as well as potassium, biotin, and magnesium.
Carrots
Carrots are a great snack for dogs and are often an ingredient used in many dog foods. They are packed with vitamin A. Some dogs will not like raw carrots, but some go crazy for them, like my small dog. He has a small mouth though, so it is important for me to give him tiny bites that he can chew.
Green Beans
Dogs can eat green beans, which are another vegetable commonly found in dog food. Dogs can eat chopped, canned, or even raw green beans. But opt for low-sodium for canned green beans. Green beans have vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
Watermelon
Watermelon is mostly water and can be an easy way to keep dogs hydrated on a hot summer day. They do, however, contain a lot of sugar, so don’t overdo it. You also want to ensure there are no seeds because seeds can cause intestinal blockage.
These are just a few of the most common foods in your kitchen that your dogs can’t eat. If you have questions about anything you’d like to feed your dog, it is always best to discuss it with your vet first. Also, keep in mind that, like humans, some dogs can have food allergies or intolerances that are not expected. With research and vet knowledge, letting your dog enjoy a tasty carrot can be a healthy treat for them.
