I used to be a customer of VPI (now Nationwide) which, at least years back, used to be terrible. I was then a customer of Petplan which, at the time, was one of the best in the market, but there were still a few too many restrictions which hindered some medical choices (only improved upon in recent months).
So, back this spring, for my new dog, I pored over all of the available plans and, based on all that experience, Figo came out best, above and beyond. They've thought of everything (see the "Compare" chart on their website) and their premium (so far) is reasonable. I've had them since June for my current dog and already (unfortunately) have had to make several claims, and they've paid as expected, and quickly, and their customer service is terrific. Definitely put them in your mix when you research plans!
Injury/Illness: skin problem and a few other assorted problems Breed: Wirehaired Pointing Griffon
We have six pets insured by Figo and two have recently become ill. It seems some program or unqualified employee is scanning vet bills for terms like "wellness" in blood panels and auto-denying entire claims based on that.
No matter the reason for the visit.
A decent vet will order whichever blood panel has the required tests in it - in order to keep costs down. I could always ask the vet to order each test one at a time so that they have impressive sciency names like "hematocrit" and "blood urea nitrogen" or "calcium". The bill would be $1000 instead of $100 though. Seriously Figo, you'd prefer that?
"Its no problem" says the lady on the phone "you can appeal"?
Yeah actually, it IS a problem. I shouldn't have to. Figo - would it have killed you to read the reason for the visit. We were pretty clear about it on the claim. Would it have killed you to phone up the vet and check if you didn't believe us?
Take the second claim. We have a new cat. When I found it on the street six months ago it was covered in fleas and scabs from scratching at the fleas. I gave it flea treatment then took it to the vet for antibiotics and a check-up, paid for this all ourselves and the cat was well again. A couple months later I added her to our policy. A couple months after that and, still flealess - she suddenly started licking patches of fur off and acquired a heart murmur.
Hmm.. Could be kidneys, could be dermatitis could be any number of neuropathies. It is heartbreaking to watch the poor little creature scratch and lick herself raw till she bleeds and we don't know why. The vet doesn't know why. The hospital doesn't know why - so she was booked in for more tests this week.
Then Figo wades in. Claim denied. Code 4. Pre-existing condition.
We cancelled the tests. She either gets better on her own soon or she gets put to sleep.
Figo outsmarted the best doctors in Georgia (and I'm no slouch at this medical stuff myself) and beat everyone to the diagnosis. I am so impressed with Figo right now. I'll be even more impressed when they name this pre-existing condition.
Know what's most impressive of all? They call the plan we're on 'Ultimate'.
Injury/Illness: Undiagnosed. Breed: American Shorthair
Claim Amount: $500 - $1000 Age of Pet: over 8 years
My cat got super sick, they sent a card, called and paid as expected! I also use wellness plan from Nationwide, which is great but always have to get them to get the right amount released. Figo is amazing, I am at peace and with so much affordable rates! The most shocking thing is that they are hardly compared on best insurance for pets or anything like that. They must be insane.
Injury/Illness: Fever Breed: Mixed Breed
Claim Amount: $500 - $1000 Age of Pet: under a year
If you're new to pet insurance, you'll probably do what I did, get about fifteen quotes (or more! From everyone!) sit down, look for reviews, read the fine print and wonder why exactly you should pick Company A and not F or K. We seriously spent about a month before the arrival of our puppy trying to decide... In the end, I chose FIGO.
They have been nothing short of amazing.
-Non-routine vet visits are covered, as opposed to not.We seriously just visited to ask our vet about a rash, and it was covered.
-Mobile app makes everything easy.
-There is a personal touch for everything they do. AppChat, text, facebook them, they WILL respond.
-Reimbursement is fast. Filing is fast. Everything is made so you don't have to spend several days trying to file your claim.
-Rates are great.
-Skip the waiting period on Patellas/knees by having a vet verify they are healthy; crucial for working, sport or active dogs.
It's just, ease in peace of mind. I'd recommend it to everyone.
