How to Save Money at Palmetto Veterinary Medicine and Surgery-ROCK HILL

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I went to the McConnells location years ago when I lived in York. Monday, I was left trying to find a place to help me put my 16 year old cat to rest peacefully, when we couldn't be seen at our current vet (not Palmetto). I called the Rock Hill location and they quickly worked us in. The staff was AMAZING. The facility was beautiful and clean. I felt they went above and beyond to not only make sure my cat was comfortable and well taken care of, but me as well. I appreciate the care and compassion we both received during that hard time. Thank you so much for making a difficult time a little easier. 100% want to transfer ongoing care of our other pet here.

Been coming here for years. Sadly, this place has been going downhill. They are strangely down to only 1 doctor. I'm not sure why the other drs.have left. The young ladies at the front desk seem short and don't even say hello when you walk in. When you call, they rush you off the phone. Called the other day, she was very rude and spoke over me, trying to rush me off the phone, when I was making a simple inquiry. I'm not sure what's happening to this place, but I'm done with them.

I bring foster pups to Palmetto, so I’m there maybe more than the average bear. Every staff member I’ve met has treated me & my fosters with kindness and respect, and I am so grateful for their commitment to supporting rescue organizations. What *really* makes Palmetto special? Obviously, it’s got to be the people. For me, it’s Mathew. He figured out how to give fluids to a sick puppy without moving the little guy out of my lap. He found a way to get a parvo survivor into my vehicle so she could feel safe enough on her hour-long journey to a foster home. He’s helped me make sure a whole bunch of adolescent fellas have had their neuter surgeries go smoothly. He doesn’t always laugh at my jokes, but he clearly cares so much about all of Palmetto’s patients and I know the rest of the staff does, too.

Yesterday was the day I dreaded the most, I had to take my 14 year old baby Mikey to be put down as he was very old and ill. We wanted to check for a quality of life exam to see if there could be any remedy for him but as soon as Dr. Blanton walked in and put his hands on Mikey he knew that Mikey was beyond from getting better and was very honest about the outcomes if he was given treatment. There was so much on Mikey’s plate that we all decided that it was time for Mikey to sleep and finally get the rest he deserved. I cannot thank Dr. Blanton and his assistant whom I don’t remember her name now for being extremely helpful and caring during these hard times for us. Mikey gave us so much during his long life and we gave him the rest that he finally needed. I recommend this place with all of my heart, they’re so caring! Thank you! 🙏

My dog hurt his leg and they would not see him they said that they were booked up but when an animal is sick, they should still make room for that dog to or cat to be seen, just like a doctor would and because of this I will not take my dog back to them ever again and I will tell everybody that I know about this experience
