How to Save Money at Como Park Animal Hospital and AfterHours Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

While the circumstances of my visit were very sad, the staff here took care of me and treated my pet that had passed with dignity and respect. The moment the tech understood why I came in she ushered us to a private room. She talked through the next steps and was very sympathetic for my loss. My friend recommended this clinic and I can see why. I would and will as well. Thank you for being kind in my moment of loss. It made the process a little easier on my heart knowing he is in good hands until his remains are returned.

Last night, my family had to make an emergency visit for our beloved cat, Daisy. After being turned down at another 24 hr vet, we called Como Park Animal Clinic. I've never had a more empathetic, compassionate and caring vet experience. They guided us through our options with as much information as they could provide. Reese especially was so calm and kind. We've owned many animals throughout our years and have had to make tough decisions before but this vet in particular made the experience respectful and made you feel like they truly cared about your pet. I truly can't recommend this place more. Thank you, Como Park Animal Hospital for your wonderful staff.

Unbelievably grateful for the staff here. I've been about 3 times, twice for urgent care/emergency situation walk-ins. Honestly, the wait has never been exceptionally long, plus they have a nice lobby. The staff genuinely seem to care about the patients! Our kitten likely would've passed if not for their care! Can't say enough good things about them.

I truly appreciate the staff at Como Park. I brought my beloved cat in for a Quality of Life check, somewhat expecting what the vet would say and what was best for Shadow. The staff was so kind, patient and understanding with me and my son while we struggled with a decision we ultimately knew was the right thing to do. They gave us the time to process and grieve and put the logistics of the situation in the background. Thank you for being such empathetic and caring people.

I am beyond amazed by this clinic! Early Saturday morning my dog cash began vomiting over and over. It got to the point where we had to bring him in. We ended up going here because of cost for the initial exam fee being much lower than those around the area. We got there and was told to expect a 4-6 hour wait (which was reasonable for their doctor having to go into a surgery) they however ended up getting us much earlier. We were recommended to keep my pup there overnight to help him pass what was in his stomach and unfortunately he had to go into surgery. But the staff there were very thorough with explaining the process and keeping us updated on how he was. Not only did they do that but they were so open about us giving them a call whenever we needed to check in on him. I can’t be more pleased with how this team preforms and operates. They never once made me feel stupid or shamed me for what was going on. I want to give a special thanks to the tech that worked with cash a lot and discharged him yesterday evening. I believe her name was Laura. She was so thorough and cared for our boy so much! Thank you to all the staff that worked hands on with cash and to the doctors that made him better. Much love to everyone over there!!!
