How to Save Money at Robert Prosek, DVM MS

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Prosek is an answer to our prayers. My 13yo cat was diagnosed with CHF at age 12 & the vet cardiologist we were taking him gave up on him saying he wouldn’t live and surprised he lived through to the next week check up. My husband and I prayed for God to extend his years and we found a new cardiologist - Dr. Prosek. He’s down to earth, realistic yet optimistic. He thinks outside the box with medicine and procedures and you can tell it’s his gifting - not just a profession. We love that he does all of the check ups/procedures while you’re in the room and he shows great care about preserving your pets life. Thank you Dr. Prosek for taking such great care of our baby!!

I can't say enough about Dr. Prosek. He saved my baby Dori's life. I came to him at a time when my baby was in a very delicate state. I didn't think my baby was going to make it another day. Dr. Prosek was fully booked and his assistant, Brittany, was so nice and helpful. She understood that it was an emergency and made the time to make sure Dr. Prosek could see Dori on a Monday afternoon. I had taken her to other specialists and they were not able to come up with a diagnosis. They did not know why she was having these seizure like episodes which ended up being syncope. I showed him a video I took when Dori was having one those episodes and within seconds he knew exactly what was going on with her even before he did the echo cardiogram. She was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension. He took the time to explain exactly what was happening to my baby's heart on a whiteboard. He wasn't aggressive in his approach on her treatment. He knew exactly what dosage and how to modify it as time went on. He gave me hope and made me feel at ease. I didn't feel like I had to question what he was doing. I knew I could trust him from the moment I met him. He really does have a love for animals and cares about each and every one of his patients. The man works more than any other doctor I know and that says a lot in this day and age. I once received a call from him at 11pm to give me the lab results and he had just left the clinic. He is in high demand so it might be hard to get an appointment with him on such short notice, but he will make it happen if it is an emergency. His team is amazing and so professional and helpful. I am so happy to say that my baby Dori is still with us a year after her diagnosis and this wouldn't of happened without Dr. Prosek. Dori is doing amazing and actually living a better life now than she was before her heart condition. If your dog has a heart problem, don't waste your time looking elsewhere.

Not only is Dr. Prozek great, but all the staff is as well! I took my chihuahua in with little hope that he would make it and they saved him. He now has to go constantly to them because he needs a treatment and I can not be happier with the way they take care of him. I would completely recommend him to anyone needing a vet cardiologist.
