How to Save Money at Tier 1 Veterinary Medical Center
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I took our 13 year old pitbull Sable in to be euthanized, due to her starting to act aggressively around my 1 year old. The staff was very kind and understanding, but the bill was just astronomical. $560 to put her down. I almost fainted when I saw that receipt. I asked around and most of my family and friends have spent 90 -200 tops on putting their animals down. I felt like they should have confirmed that price with me before they charged my card. Our finances now hurt almost as much as our hearts. If I would have known that it would be that much, I would have had a friend take her out and shoot her. It would have been just as fast. And about 40¢ Naturally, that's not what we would prefer, but we just can't afford a bill like that without budgeting it in. (Editing to respond to the comment): like I said, it's definitely not the preferred way to take care of the problem. I looked it up after I posted this, and apparently some shelters will euthanize for free, so that's what I should have looked for. And no. The ladies were very kind, but no one gave me an estimate before they charged my card. I would have walked out if they had.

For those who say they are too expensive, let me say this: you get what you pay for. When we brought little Sparta here, she was on death's doorstep. The Dr.s here knew what they were doing. Sparta was nursed back to enough health to be able to undergo life saving surgery. Each interaction with staff also conveyed the message that they cared about not just Sparta, but also my 8 year daughter that was crying her eyes out thinking her Kitty wasn't going to survive. They let us come each day to visit Sparta. Top notch care. If you want the best care for your pet/best friend, this is the place to be. Thank you Tier 1 for saving Sparta's life.

We took our beloved dog to Tier 1 to be euthanized. Everybody involved in her care was kind and considerate. She was triaged within 10 minutes of our arrival. Then we were taken to a private room where we sat on a comfortable couch and all of her care was rendered in that room. The receptionist came to the room so we didn't have to go to the front desk to pay our bill. We were even offered a 10% discount for military service. The entire staff is excellent and we appreciate you! Thank you for making a sad and stressful situation as positive and pleasant as possible.

Chinook twisted his stomach while we were boondocking almost 2 hours away. We rushed him to Tier 1 for emergency surgery. The doctors, techs, and staff were wonderful! It is now 1.5 weeks later and Chinook is doing great… THANK YOU ALL!

Tier 1 has been nothing short of outstanding when it has come to the care of my pup. They were able to diagnose his underlying condition, and were happy to choose a route to diagnosis that was cost-effective and saved money for treatment. Their oncology department, Dr. Schmidt, shot me straight from the beginning about my dog's condition, and took the time to follow up with a phone call and explain things in depth after I'd had some time to process all the information he gave me. Dr. Serratore performed the life-saving surgery and gave Beau his new look. She did an outstanding job navigating something that I’m sure a lot of vets haven’t dreamed of having to perform. All of the staff has been caring, professional, and courteous... and they've gone the extra mile to make sure that this overthinking Dog Dad can be armed with all information and expert opinion. You can tell they're all pet owners themselves, and they're able to sympathize with the situations you find yourself in. Update: Beau has since passed on, but I wanted to add some pictures of him and thank the team for gifting us with a wonderful bonus year. I miss that boy so much… but having that extra year with him is something that I’ll always treasure.
