How to Save Money at El Dorado Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I took in a 9 day old sick kitten here and didn’t feel they were knowledgeable. I called ahead and personally asked if they had experience with young neonatal kittens before I took her in there they said yes over the phone, took her in explained all symptoms doctor told me it was pretty “normal” and she looked healthy even when I said I had bottle babies before and it wasn’t normal. When I got home she only got worse then I called again a few days later explained the anti diarrhea medication he gave her has done absolutely nothing, and she still has the same symptoms but worse they told me I would have to pay the 90$ for them to see her again when I was literally just there a couple days ago with the same exact symptoms but I was told she was fine. and I already spent $160. They didn’t care. So I ended up taking her to a different vet instead and she told me none of what she is doing is normal and that doctor was incorrect. she needed antibiotics and fluids. I don’t think they are knowledgeable or truly care about helping your animals they are just after the money. If I already gave them 90$ to evaluate her with the same symptoms 2 days ago why should I have to pay again when the doctor is the one who incorrectly diagnosed her. The doctor seemed like a nice guy but you shouldn’t lie about experience with neonatal kittens or charge clients the 90fee again when you didn’t help the first time. I wasted $160 here and got no where for trying to be a good soul and save a little kittens life when they could’ve been honest with me and I could’ve looked for a better vet elsewhere. I feel like he brushed off my concerns and didn’t listen to me. Like the other one star reviews.. Baby fosters or finders or pet owners who want a honest doctor and good honest care beware of this place.

I trust that my pups are in good hands at El Dorado Animal Hospital. The staff is very friendly, they have customer appreciation month each year which includes discount pricing on vaccinations, and best of all the vet will call and check on your fur baby after a procedure. Another thing I appreciate is that they will give you a cold beer during your visit! My pup Rosie loves one of the employees named Ashley that works there.

This vet is horrible they are very expensive and unprofessional. I was charged a $90 exam fee for a repack of my dogs ears when the vet looked at him for one second. Also, my friend took her dog for euthanasia recently and they didn't use sedation so the dog had a very painful death.

I called many other places and no other place gave me the answer I was looking for. Instead they would ask me to come in for a consultation or tell me to contact the food companies directly. They would just keep beating around the bush when they saw that I wasn't going to pay for a visit for such an easy question. Luckily, Samantha answered my call and she told me what I should and shouldn't do when it came to feeding certain foods to my dogs. She was quick, responsive, and very professional. This is the type of customer service that deserves 5* ratings and higher.
