How to Save Money at Dover Area Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Brought my dog here, I’ve been very happy with the care we have Received it’s very simple to make an appointment and the staff is very friendly. My dog Emma’s wags her tail walking in the door. Pricing isn’t bad definitely better cost then our last vet. Very easy to get to, highly recommend this vet to any loving pet owners.

I am so happy that I made a change and took a leap of faith. Dr. Mike, god bless him, had to spend an hour at our intake meeting because my dog has so many (and significant) health issues. Not to mention he is on a ton of meds. He took the time to listen to me and diligently followed up with everything I brought in from my previous vet. Additonally, as an autistic person, I need clear communication and someone to thoroughly explain things to me. I cannot tell you how many times I have left vet offices thoroughly confused because I was spoken to in medical terms I did not understand or was rushed through quickly with short answers. Clarity is so important when you are trying to understand what is going on with your pet. The facility is clean, the front desk staff is friendly, and I adore that I can keep my pet in the car until they are ready for him. That in and of itself is a huge stress relief for me as the pet owner. Not only that, my dog and all of his health issues were getting to be extremely expensive. I have been pleasantly surprised at the fair pricing here. I travel 45 minutes to get here and it is worth every minute.

All the Techs and the Veterinarians that we've had so far have been amazing, patient, and very knowledgable. The women at the front desk are quick to welcome you. The whole facility is kept very clean. My only critique would be that the women in the back check-out/medication pick-up area aren't as quick to acknowledge you or at least let you know that you'll be helped in a moment.

Wow… they remembered. It was about 6 months and only brought the crew here once but they acted like we are there every week and knew exactly what we were there for and the necessary steps to fix the problem. We now have a new vet!

We brought our 3 year old cat here for a non surgical procedure in which he needed anethesia. They called shortly after the time they said he would be done. We brought him home & he seemed groggy, but seemed normal as he had just been sedated. We called the vet next day because he still didn't seem like himself; not eating, not drinking & lethargic. We were told he was "probably just mad" & was told to isolate him in a room by himself for 24-48 hours to monitor his bathroom, eating & drinking. At this point, he started getting cold to the touch, we called again, explained all the same symptoms, and now he's also cold to the touch. We were told to call back tomorrow to see if there was a cancelation & then we were told to come in & pick up an appetite stimulant??? We didn't care that he wasn't eating, we were worried about dehydration & hypothermia. That medicine was $72 (after just paying almost $300 for the procedure), & the least of our problems, while there picking up that medicine, it was explained to them that he was "ice cold & appeared to have shallow breathing" we believed he was suffering from hypothermia. They said Dr. Todd was not available, but he will call us. He called us after they closed and said he didn't see how it could be hypothermia. He was checked on at 4am, by morning, he had passed away. We feel that this office is very impersonal & will not be recommending this office to anyone & and would encourage you to stay away as well. We also will be switching veterinarian offices for our other pets. I truly feel they should have seen him again, but they just wanted another $180.00 for cremation.
