How to Save Money at Green Dog Dental & Wellness

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve brought my GSD here three times and had a great experience each time. He’s had a dental cleaning under anesthesia in April 2023. They really did try without it first though! But I already figured they would need to use sedation because he gets a little nutty without me to calm him down. The pricing was fair in my opinion - $408. VCA wanted over $1000. I came back a couple months later for two vaccines - $40. They were quick and painless with him. The third time was recently. $457 for: exam (he had a lump I wanted evaluated), heartworm test, labs (I requested, they didn’t push me to do it), and a 6 month supply of Simparica. Really fair pricing in my opinion. And they take really good care of my doggy! Staff is ALWAYS nice. The facilities are amazing and the waiting area is fantastic so that you can do work while waiting for your pet. Free wifi! Really helpful :)

Green Dog Venice is an outstanding facility. Everyone that works there is so kind, knowledgeable and supportive. They did surgery on my “Smokey” and everything was great. I can not thank the team enough. We are so grateful.

***AVOID*** If you care for your pet's life, please avoid Green Dog Dental. We believe they were negligent with our 14.5 year old fur baby at the Venice Beach/Santa Monica location, and now she is gone. We took her in at the end of March as a follow-up appointment from six months earlier at a different vet. Our beloved dog went to GD for lab work, an ultrasound, and an oral exam. Sadly, we had to put her down due to presumed acute kidney failure merely two weeks following the oral surgery that GD said she had to have. Her ultrasound was performed by Dr. Geist. He found a small cancerous growth in her gall bladder that was well placed away from the ureters. However, we were told a decent prognosis of almost a year with non-aggressive treatment, and potentially longer with treatment we planned to pursue, a reality we could accept. Her lab work showed kidney levels that were about .1 higher than normal range. We were assured by Dr. Habawel that we had to rush the oral surgery and that her blood levels were fine to proceed, so Habawel cleared her for X-rays and oral surgery. Regrettably, we went ahead and scheduled our sweet baby's oral surgery the following week, given these assurances. At no point was there any concern expressed by GD for our dog's health or overall complications. During the oral procedure, we received a call from Dr. Lau, someone we had never even heard of--we had been led to believe that Habawel, the person who recorded her oral exam report, was going to be performing the procedure. Lau told us that they gave our dog a "specific amount" of sedative, which we were told she resisted. Instead of calling us at that point, GD proceeded to give our dog "the whole amount" of anesthesia, which we never approved nor were aware of, in order to sedate her enough to be able to do the x-ray. Only after this was done and they did the x-ray did Lau call us. During that call, Lau said she would have to pull 32 teeth, contrary to Habawel's report from the previous week indicating it would be no more than 10 teeth pulled. But during that call, we were being told by a doctor that it has to be done because she is already sedated. We just didn't know any better even though we asked so many questions. We were made to feel like we were annoying them with our inquiries. GD didn't inform us that there is a relationship between anesthesia and kidney failure; they didn't inform us that there is a relationship with surgical trauma or associated dehydration and kidney failure. Our dog already had elevated kidney levels, but GD never advised us of these risks specific to her condition, and we never approved additional anesthesia. As she started getting more sick after the oral surgery and not eating or drinking, we asked GD what we could do, sending texts and e-mails describing her deterioration, but GD never advised that it could be an acute kidney issue requiring immediate care, despite that acute kidney failure is commonly caused by anesthesia, surgery, trauma, dehydration, as we learned too late. But GD said it would be fine to wait the weekend and see if she improved, and that she was still recovering from surgery. She didn't improve, so after the weekend, GD treated her in vain for three days for acute kidney failure. Because we trusted in GD's assurances, now our sweet and healthy fur baby, who never had an illness her entire life, is gone. It was a brutal, painful, confusing time of agony for her and for us. She wanted to live. As we come to find out, we are not the first people this has happened to at Green Dog Dental and apparently in the last few weeks "this has been happening a lot." Please save yourselves from the hearbreak and from spending thousands of dollars in charges from these upselling product pushers who do not care about your pets. They clearly only care about their profits. I am reposting this as a PSA being that my previous post from April seems to be removed regularly. Please avoid Green Dog Dental if you care for your pet. Let alone, your elderly pet.

I trusted this place for years to do my dogs teeth cleaning since it didn't require anesthesia and the the price was affordable. Eventually they said they couldn't clean my dogs teeth and they'd have to remove half his teeth. I trusted them and did the surgery. Again I go back for cleaning then they say they can't do the cleaning and have to remove more teeth, possibly the remaining ones left. Everything costs a penny from blood work to x-rays all of which they have to do prior to surgery yet can make the claim they need to pull teeth. I took my dog to another vet and after deep cleaning they said no teeth needed to be removed and it was just very deep buildup that needed to be removed. Always get a second opinion and it makes me question if they needed to remove half my dogs teeth the first time around.

This is an amazing place for pet dental care! The staff is so friendly and welcoming, and they make sure that both the pets and their owners feel comfortable and at ease. They use the latest technology and techniques to provide top-notch dental care, and I am always impressed by how well my dog responds to their treatments. The prices are reasonable, and the quality of care is unbeatable. I would highly recommend Green Dog Dental & Wellness to anyone looking for exceptional pet dental care.
