How to Save Money at Abbey Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve been bringing my fur babies to Abby for many years and I’ve always received wonderful service. They recognize us when we call in prescriptions and that makes us feel good that they know who we are and they know what we need for our pets. I emailed them last night about a concern I have with my sick kitten and they called me back today and took time out of their busy day to talk with me about what I could do. Unfortunately they were all booked today but they gave me a good recommendation for a vet that could see him same day. As a pet mommy worried for my lethargic kitten, it means a lot that they genuinely care about their clients and their pets.

My dearest friend had to leave the country, I was taking care of her house & pup Bailey. I noticed Bailey was shaking her head side to side, oh,oh! Knew what that meant, so her owner had left the info for Abby Vet. From the moment I walked in the door the staff was welcoming… even to the very nervous little Beagle who accompanied me. The assistant was asking all the pertinent questions & was terrific, Bailey began calming. When the Dr. entered the room she had all the details & made a rapid assessment. Bailey was given a ear medication created especially for her based on fungal infection the cells had produced and they interpreted. The Dr. spent a great deal of time explaining the situation & the cure. It’s possible Bailey got better treatment than I get medically! Bailey recovered quickly. We are grateful to the staff for their professionalism, kindness and cure!

Friendly, professional staff. Plenty of parking and clean premises. I was seen on time and had a very good experience from check-in to check-out. My shy, timid cat was treated with gentleness and kindness, which is very appreciated. I also appreciated knowing the prices of services up front and clear explanations of what was being done and why. Thank you:)

I would HIGHLY recommend avoiding this Pet Hospital. The staff is mostly cooperative and competent. I had a challenging circumstance - In Trying to Ensure - that My Adult Child - could have the bill paid for his dog (and the bill ended up being over $300). He was subsequently sent a letter - requiring him to find another vet (while no mention was "discovered" or made to my/our (other) dog) - because of my alleged improper behavior. I asked - that a staff member take my credit card number and write it down - so the bill could be paid, because it appeared I would be unavailable to authorize payment when he was finished there. That was "not policy" - and I was "wrong". I tried to resolve this matter by phone with the Office Manager - was told that I'd be called back on one of two days (when I followed up to my initial request to talk with her) - and was actually called - 11-12 days after the date I was to be called back. This matter could have been resolved - by the Office Manager - calling me in the first place. Customer service - clearing up issues - is NOT a strong point here. Again - the staff is mostly nice! I prefer a vet - where I'm treated and accepted. I've brought pets to vets - for well over 40 years - only had difficulties with One Person - and One place - here - and her support staff - couldn't help me with this!

I love coming to Abbey for their team. I've trusted them with every one of my pets from regular check ups to emergencies. They were also very accommodating recently when I brought my dog-reactive dog in. They have a procedure where the whole team is involved and made it work smoothly so that my dog can still be seen and get the care he needed. On top of that, everyone is kind and works with me to make decisions about my pets. I appreciate the whole team at Abbey.
