  Trupanion Direct Pay

In 2013, Trupanion introduced a direct pay feature for their insurance. Current pet insurance works on a reimbursement model: when you get a bill from your vetinarian, you must pay the bill out of pocket and then sumbit the bill to your insurance company. Once the insurance company approves your claim, you are issued a check.

Trupanion has the ability to electronically receive and pay vet bills while the pet owner is still in the vet's office. They state that most claims are reviewed and paid within 10 minutes. The pet owner is only responsible for their 10% co-pay and any deductible or treatment not covered under the terms of the policy.

According to their website, Trupanion has the ability to use direct pay with hundreds of vet clinics and hospitals.

The direct pay model is more comman in the UK, with pet insurers such as Petplan, Directline and Sainsburys offering direct payment to veterinarians.
